Cycling Lane Analysis

Cycling Lane Analysis

Halifax

Client: Halifax Regional Municipality

Timeline: 2010

The Project

SSG was hired to conduct an extensive literature review on the non-economic advantages and disadvantages of on-road cycling lanes compared with physically separated cycling lanes.  This was used as the basis to perform a multi-criteria analysis to evaluate the two different options against a range of variables.

Our Role

  • Completing a detailed literature review using academic and general resources.
  • Reviewing studies, design guidance and analysis completed by municipal jurisdictions in Canada, the US and Europe considered to be leaders in the development of cycling infrastructure.
  • Developing a compilation of key documents.

Our Approach

For the first step of the literature we searched academic literature using the search terms cycling, bicycling, bicycle and cycle in combination with path, pathways, lanes, safety, facilities, infrastructure and  urban planning.  This was followed by a review of municipal studies and documents from Vancouver, Montreal, Portland, New York, Copenhagen and Berlin.  We collected and compiled 130 documents including design guides, academic papers and articles for a collaborative analysis and review.
