Integrated Design Process - Architecture Course

Integrated Design Process - Architecture Course

Canada

Client: Athabasca University, Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC)

Timeline: May - October, 2009

The Project

SSG developed a specialized 2 week, 3 lesson-unit online education module about The Integrated Design Process (IDP). It includes learning outcomes, information about the different aspects and issues to consider in IDP, exercises, and frameworks for stimulating on-line dialogue. This module was part of a larger review and update to Athabasca University’s architecture training courses facilitated by Donald Ardiel Architects and this module has now become part of the standard training program for Athabasca’s Architecture students.

The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada Centre for Architecture at Athabasca University (RAIC AU) offers the first entirely on-line International Architecture Degree. Established in 1907 the RAIC is the leading voice for architecture in Canada and represents a standard of excellence in the field. Athabasca University (AU) is a pioneer in developing accredited online training and degree programs.

Our Role

• Reviewing existing training course materials on different topics, and working closely with the team lead, to develop appropriate format and content that integrated with other lesson unit.
• Designing a distance learning module with course materials.
• Developing innovative strategies to stimulate on-line dialogue and create exercises appropriate for individuals as well as groups learning at distance.

Our Approach

We applied our expertise in IDP to develop a training program that is comprehensive and thorough, yet appropriate for this particular student group. Adapting our professional experience and knowledge to an academic context, we created three 30-45 minute lesson modules, an online discussion forum, lecture notes to accompany presentation slides, learning outcomes, reading list, and course material. The lesson modules are organized under: IDP in Theory and Practice, IDP Roles and Responsibilities, and Mechanics of IDP.
