The goal of One Planet Living is “to create neighbourhoods across the world that strengthen community, provide a healthier quality of life, and restore nature with an 80% ecological footprint reduction.” The underlying principle is to design communities in ways that, if replicated everywhere on earth, would satisfy the needs of everyone without surpassing the carrying capacity of one planet.

SSG works with Bioregional to help design and deliver stakeholder engagement processes used to create Sustainability Action Plans, based on the 10 OPL principles, in order for developments to obtain official endorsement as One Planet Communities. We help develop and deliver the vision for some of the world’s most sustainable places to live.

One Planet Living has established 10 broad sustainability goals to guide the design and operation of One Planet Communities. In order to achieve these goals, Bioregional helps developers and communities create Sustainability Action Plans that set ambitious 2020 targets. These targets exceed the highest green building standards for materials, water, renewable energy and indoor air quality. They also promote green schools and child-safe roads; provide quality affordable housing and green-collar jobs; require restaurants and shops to offer local, organic, and fair trade products; provide cleaner transportation options; and make it easier to adopt healthy, green lifestyles.

Projects that develop Sustainability Action Plans according to stringent 2020 One Planet targets are eligible to receive Bioregional’s official One Planet Community endorsement, a sign of “the highest achievement in sustainable design and operation”. Bioregional is now working on a One Planet City designation, for communities using the ten goals on a larger scale.
