The Project

A new building to accommodate the medical education program and the Life Sciences Institute. The Institute comprises 25,000 sq metres of interdisciplinary research space and is only the second research facility in Canada to receive LEED Gold designation.

Innovations and Achievements

• The largest LEED certified project at the date of certification.
• Operating energy savings of 28%, particularly challenging in a research driven facility.
• Operating water savings of 50% over standard building.
• Emits 1,000 tonnes fewer greenhouse gases than standard building.
• Green cleaning program.
• 1.3 million kilograms of construction waste recycled or salvaged during construction.
• 50% of landscape restored and replanted with native or adapted species.
• A dynamic lighting and ventilation monitoring system contributes to an annual saving of 6.4 million kWh of electricity and nearly $200,000 in energy costs.
