Victoria, British Columbia

Our Role: LEED project management and IDP facilitation

Client: University of Victoria

Budget: $19.8 Million

Size: 88,264 sq feet (8,200 sq metres)

Timeline: 2004-2008

The Project

Remediating and reusing an existing parking lot on campus, the UVic Engineering and Computer Sciences Building houses offices, computer laboratories, teaching and study/gathering space. This project facilitated larger campus wide improvements to transportation demand management, and stormwater collection and treatment using natural systems.

Innovations and Achievements

• The first green roof on the campus, it requires no irrigation.
• 2,700,000 litres of potable water savings through an innovative treatment system that reuses water from a neighbouring biological research facility.
• Dual plumbing reuses greywater in toilet flushing.
• Energy use is 38% below the Model National Energy Building Code energy efficiency rating.
• An innovative heat recovery system uses heat from re-circulated waste water to supplement building’s heating requirements by 350,000 kWh annually.
• 90% of all areas receive natural daylight from exterior glazing and indirect light from the atrium.
• A focus on local and healthy interior materials and finishes.
