The Co-operative Business Case for Sustainability

1) Improving employee satisfaction, engagement and productivity.
As corporate social and environmental responsibilities become more mainstream, more employees want to work for a company that is committed to sustainability policies, and are looking to actively participate in companies’ environmental initiatives. For instance, over 80% of US workers said working for an organization that makes the environment top priority is important.

Hewitt Associates conducted a Canadian study of over 100,000 employees and 2,000 leaders at more than 230 workplaces. They found that there was a high correlation between employee engagement and CSR.

SSG’s Solution: SSG works with your key stakeholders to cultivate an understanding of environmental impacts and their relationship to your organizational mission and operations. We develop a comprehensive action plan to change culture and practices that works to engage your employees in your sustainability commitments and help your organization achieve meaningful reductions in environmental impact.

2) Attracting and retain customers, improve brand reputation.
In the move toward greater transparency, organizations are disclosing their environmental impact reductions commitments for customers, investors and other stakeholders. A national survey of 1,013 adult Canadians revealed that two-thirds of consumers are likely to switch their spending to companies that have demonstrated a commitment to green policies. 67 per cent said they are likely to switch to banks, stores and other retail or service outlets that have demonstrated their commitment to the environment. In addition, GlobeScan trend research reveals that Canadians are the most likely to reward companies seen as socially responsible, and this number has grown since 2004.

SSG’s Solution: SSG will provide your organization an audited report with third party assessment of your carbon emissions, a new form of accountability to stakeholders and the public.

3) Opportunities to avoid and reduce operational costs.
Companies find that by reducing waste and their use of energy, materials, resources, and water they are able to improve operational efficiency and decrease costs. While such efficiencies can require initial capital investments to upgrade technologies or business processes, the returns can be significant.

SSG’s Solution: SSG identifies key opportunities for your organization to reduce operational costs. Once we’ve measured your baseline - your organization’s current emissions - we work with you to implement emissions reduction actions based on specific nature of your organizational operations, starting with relatively easy “low hanging fruit” actions.  We’ll connect you to the latest tools to track your emissions progress while ensuring you can continue to carry out your operations effectively.

4) Mitigating risk.
Global change in climate is plagued with many uncertainties. This uncertainty stems primarily from unpredictable energy and fuel prices, resource scarcity, potential carbon prices, and unabated emission trends. Marsh Canada, the world's leading broker and risk advisor, refers to climate change as “…one of the most significant emerging risks facing the world today, presenting huge challenges to the environment and to the world economy. It is also one of the most difficult risks to mitigate“.

SSG’s Solution: SSG ensures quality control so that organizations disclosing to investors and customers or participating in emissions trading schemes or voluntary initiatives are able to provide accurate and reliable data that can withstand audit scrutiny. We use internationally recognized standards, and specialized software to create accurate emissions assessments.
